BERGANS

MATERIALS SELECTION
The considerations we make when we source materials are decisive for our products’ environmental footprint. Our products contain raw materials, both natural and synthetic, all of which have an environmental impact in manufacturing and conversion from raw material to finished product.

It is in the design stage of our products that we can really make a difference. One of the most important factors is that we develop high quality products that have a long service life. There are many choices of different materials, and we endeavor to always keep up to date on the options that ensure better environmental performance and any new, innovative materials we can test. We are committed to avoiding the use of harmful chemicals by opting for bluesign®-approved materials and suppliers.

DOWN

All of our down is 100 % certified to the Responsible Down Standard (RDS). We require all down used in our products to be a residual product from food production. Because of our commitment to animal welfare, we also decline to do business with suppliers who remove down and feathers from live birds (live-plucking or molt-harvesting) and/or who practice force feeding. In addition, Bergans’ down supplies are tested by the IDFL (International Down & Feather Laboratory) before being used in our products. This guarantees both you and us high quality and ethically produced down.

WOOL

Animal welfare is an important aspect of our corporate responsibility. One of our strict requirements is that all the wool in our products must be non-mulesed. We verify compliance by requiring a certificate issued by reliable international organizations for every single consignment of wool. This allows us to trace the wool back to the country of origin.

RECYCLED MATERIALS

We use recycled materials in a number of our products. One such material, Repreve®, is used in several of our t-shirts and also the Sira pants and shorts. Repreve® is recycled polyester made from recycled plastic bottles. In a number of our padded garments, we use PrimaLoft® Silver Insulation Eco, which is an insulating material made from recycled, post-consumption materials. We also use recycled wool in a number of our products.

We take the problems posed by the cotton industry seriously, and use organic cotton in more and more of our products. Organic cotton is cultivated without the use of hazardous chemicals, chemical pesticides and artificial fertilizers. To guarantee that the cotton we source is organic, we require our suppliers to provide proof of their approved certification from Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Institute for Marketecology (IMO) and Control Union.

We use Bergans ArcticInsulation in garments designed to provide good heat insulation, even under moist conditions and during various levels of activity.

PRIMALOFT® GOLD INSULATION
The synthetic insulation material PrimaLoft® Gold provides excellent insulation in relation to its weight and thickness. The patented microfiber structure captures body warmth, creating synthetic insulation which is highly heat-efficient. This fabric is also water repellent and keeps you nicely warm, even when it gets wet – it retains 96 % of its warmth when wet. In addition to its warming properties and soft feel, the insulation has great wicking properties and is compressible. The insulation is bluesign® approved.

PRIMALOFT® SILVER INSULATION ECO
PrimaLoft® Silver Insulation Eco consists of 70 % recycled materials. The fibers absorb very little moisture so the insulation feels drier and warmer, even under wet conditions. At the same time the microfibers wick moisture away from the body so that it does not feel clammy. The insulation has an excellent heat-to-weight ratio, making it light and easy to pack. It also feels soft when you are wearing it. The insulation is bluesign® approved.

DEVOLD OF NORWAY

Some of the world's happiest sheep graze on the legendary pastures of Australia. The lush landscape of the enigmatic green islands of New Zealand is home to millions of sheep. And a few people as well. This is where we get our exclusive Merino wool.

Here, the animals spend most of their lives outdoors under the eucalyptus trees, with almost no contact with humans at all. This is where merino wool – the best wool you can get, we reckon – comes from. That said, merino sheep originally come from Spain and Portugal, but nowadays most of them can be found in this part of the world. And we're very pleased about that.

Merino sheep are small and pretty, a little bit smaller than "ordinary" sheep, but their wool is amazingly fine. These wool fibres are extremely thin - just a quarter of the thickness of a human hair.
When we choose the wool for garments to be worn next to the skin, softness is one of the most important qualities we consider. The result is that the first thing you notice, when putting on one of our garments, is the soft, natural warmth that spreads immediately.
There are a lot of steps involved in taking the wool from the pastures of Australia and turning it into garments on the other side of the world. At Devold, we're proud to tell people about our partners – and with good reason.

Happy sheep make good wool, and to make sure we maintain firm control of animal welfare Devold has decided to buy "raw wool" or what's known as "wool tops". This is untreated wool that we refine ourselves. Devold is one of a very small number of brands that controls the entire production line – from the shearing of the sheep, to carding, spinning, dyeing, sewing, design and making the garments.
We only use biodegradable dyes when making our woollen garments. There are no heavy metals or other shortcuts. Just soft, pure wool – and happy sheep.

On the world stage, this is unique. As a result, our wool is great – and our consciences are clear.

WOOLMARK

NATURAL, BIODEGRADABLE, RENEWABLE

Merino Sheep grazing on grassland

Australian Merino wool is an entirely natural fibre grown year-round. Grazing on extensive grassland terrain, Merino sheep in Australia are free-range animals that live a largely carefree existence. From the high rainfall areas of the eastern seaboard to the drier pastoral areas of the west, Merino sheep have become an integral part of the iconic Australian landscape.

Australia is home to about 71 million sheep, with close to 3/4 of Australia’s flock being Merino. The remainder is composed of crossbred and other breeds of sheep.

A wool fibre is composed of a natural protein called keratin that is biodegradable, similar to the protein found in human hair. When disposed of, Merino wool decomposes in soil in a matter of years, slowly releasing valuable nitrogen-based nutrients back into the earth, acting like a fertiliser. In contrast, synthetic fibres can be extremely slow to degrade.

And Merino wool is a completely renewable fibre; Australian Merino sheep produce a new fleece every year. In addition, Australian Merino farmers work tirelessly to conserve the pastures on which their Merino sheep graze, protecting and preserving the natural resources for future generations while maintaining the efficiency of their land.

KARI TRAA

FROM OLYMPIC CHAMPION TO SUCCESSFUL SPORTS BRAND

Kari Traa is not just a champion freestyle skier with three Olympic medals to her name, but also the creator of the now fastest growing sports brand in Europe.

Kari’s story begins in Voss, the small town caught between the Norwegian fjords and mountains, where she was born and raised. Kari`s Norwegian heritage has not only given her a talent for skiing, but also an eye for design and a unique passion for creativity. Even during the height of her skiing career, Kari somehow found ways to develop that creativity.

Being active in a male dominated sport, there were few brands for girls to choose gear from. Sponsors provided Kari with black and grey dominated, masculine skiwear. So sometimes, Kari would cut of the logo on her beanies and sew them on to her own designs.

Materials we use

Duck down

Goose down

4-way stretch

2-way stretch fabrics stretch in one direction, usually from selvedge to selvedge (but can be in other directions depending on the knit). 4-way stretch fabrics, such as spandex, stretches in both directions, crosswise and lengthwise.

Stretch fabrics evolved from the scientific effort to make fibres using neoprene. From this research, in 1958 commercial stretch fabrics ('elastomerics') such as spandex or elastane (widely branded as 'Lycra') were brought to the market.

BIONIC-FINISH ECO
Hydrophobic finishing with BIONIC-FINISH® ECO is based on a fluorine-free recipe. Hyperbranched, hydrophobic polymers with ramified structures like in tree tops orientate in an orderly manner on the textile and crystallise on specifically adusted comb polymers. The optimum arrangement of many of these functional elements is highly effective. Additional boosters (crosslinking agents) ensure the optimum attachment and durability on many fibre substrates.

DRIRELEASE
Our eco-friendly solutions keep customers cool, dry, fresh and comfortable — whatever the application — in high-performance athleticwear, sportswear, intimates or sleepwear.
Because fabrics made with drirelease technology do not alter its fibers with chemicals of any kind, performance is permanent. It will not “wash out” over time. The brilliance of drirelease fabrics is the patented combination of hydrophobic and hydrophilic fibers that allow them to engage with moisture naturally to dramatically improve how wetness is pulled from the skin and released into the air. Roll over the text next to the detailed fiber illustration below the benefit icons to see the “engine” that powers drirelease products.

COOLDRY
CoolDry maximizes the transmission of moisture from the skin to the outer surface of the fabric by integrating the comfort of cotton and quick-dry performance of polyester. At the same time the unique structure makes the fabric more breathable and soft, comfort, keeping the fabric and skin dry therefore giving the feeling of health and comfort.

THE FUNCTIONS
Light and Comfortable :
Compared to a regular polyester, the tetra cross channel cross section of the COOLDRY fiber are 25% lighter.

Dry-Comfort and Breathable:
The tetra channel structure of the fiber repels the moisture more quickly and keep the body dry and comfortable.

High Moisture Absorbency and Quick Drying:
By integrating the comfort of cotton and quick drying performance of polyester, it can absorb sweat from the skin and quickly and transport it to the outer of textile to evaporate.

Lenzing Modal
Lenzing Modal®, a modal fiber from Lenzing, is naturally soft on the skin and exceptionally ecological. The fiber is produced, using Edelweiss® technology. Edelweiss stands for a "symbiotic" production process - pulp, the raw material, is produced at the same site as the Modal fiber itself. Thus production can be done while going easy on energy and other resources. Simply Edelweiss!
